Vendredi de Vocabulaire: Les Actions

Given the economy, (l’économie, f) I guess it had to happen sometime. At French Meetup this week, there was a lot of discussion about the stocks, during which I learned the following words:

  • une action – In addition to being a cognate for an action, it means a share of stock.
  • un(e) actionnaire – A stockholder or shareholder.
  • une cote – A rating as for a stock but also for a film (as in stars, not G, PG, R, etc). Les cotes are also the odds for a race. Note that this is different from une côte (a seacoast) or un côté (a side).

(Merci encore à Olivier.)
