Eating Local and Eating Green

I know a number of people who try to eat local. Their reasons for doing so are pretty varied, ranging from wanting to support local farmers to wanting high quality, fresh seasonal items. I haven’t heard too many cite environmental reasons, but I can see how that would be a concern for many people. As this article points out, however, sometimes determining the environmental impact of one’s decisions is not so easy.

  1. You may also want to check out this post on EatLocalChallenge, as well as the Boston Globe article it references.

The greenhouse gas/petroleum use issue is a bigger part of my reason to pick organic/biodynamic/beyond organic food over “conventional” food than my reasons to pick local over nonlocal food, but the NYTimes point about NZ lamb was interesting.

  2. I’m off and on with eating restrictions. Been “no land animals, no eggs, no dairy” since March; pretty happy with that. Don’t know I could pull off, “locals only.”
